The American Election: A Canadian Perspective

As the U.S. presidential election unfolds, conversations from breakfast to late-night chats with my brother-in-law are dominated by the question: Who will win—Trump or Harris? It’s intriguing how, here in Canada, the American political scene garners such intense interest, almost as if it’s our own national pastime.

Reflecting on my time in the United States, I recall the warmth and kindness of the people I met. They are among the most genuine individuals I’ve encountered. Yet, there’s a palpable tension between the populace and their government, a sense that political machinations often distract from the nation’s core values. It’s disheartening to witness such a dynamic in a country with so much potential.

Back in Canada, I find myself pondering why we, as a smaller nation, become so engrossed in American elections. Our own political landscape is rich with issues that demand attention. Perhaps it’s the sheer influence of the U.S. on global affairs that draws us in, or maybe it’s the spectacle of it all. Regardless, it’s essential to remember that while it’s natural to be curious about our neighbor’s politics, our primary focus should remain on addressing the challenges within our own borders.
