A Grateful Heart in Constant Motion
As the year winds down, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of experiences that November and December have brought. It’s incredible how the threads of life weave a tapestry that is both chaotic and beautiful. From the comforting familiarity of Richmond Hill to the bustling streets of Austin, to the awe-inspiring landscapes of New Mexico and beyond, this season has been one of movement, gratitude, and introspection.
The Beauty of Constant Change
Toronto has been my anchor for nearly 28 years, yet my soul thrives on change. Richmond Hill, with its rich diversity and flavors, offers a sense of belonging, but there’s always the allure of exploration. It’s a reminder that life is richer when you keep moving, embracing new places and faces, while cherishing the roots that ground you.
As I stood under the Canadian flag fluttering in the crisp November breeze, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the life I’ve built here. Yet, the pull of adventure beckons—a journey to Washington, D.C., and eventually Austin, Texas, where family, work, and memories blend seamlessly into a mosaic of purpose.
Worldschooling Adventures and Family Bonding
This season marked another chapter in our worldschooling journey. From the majestic gorges of Letchworth State Park in New York to the engaging exhibits at the Corning Glass Museum, each stop enriched our perspectives. Meeting fellow worldschooling families at the U.S. Botanical Garden was a highlight, reaffirming that education and growth thrive beyond the confines of a classroom.
Driving westward through Texas brought new revelations. In Los Ojos, New Mexico, we found magic in the adobe houses and tranquil landscapes. Bandelier National Monument reminded us of the resilience of ancient civilizations, while the streets of Santa Fe exuded a charm that captivated all of us. These moments reaffirm the power of travel to connect us to history, nature, and each other.
Reflections on Family and Resilience
Through long drives, shared meals, and spontaneous adventures, our family strengthened its bond. There were moments of joy, like the sunrise hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque, and moments of reflection, as we walked through the spiritual landscapes of Taos Pueblo. Even in challenges—like a growing windshield crack or a child’s boredom—there was growth.
Zara, Safia, and Sanaa each brought their unique energy to the journey, making every experience richer. As a father, watching them navigate these experiences with curiosity and resilience is a reminder of why we’ve embraced this lifestyle.
The Road Home
Returning home to Richmond Hill after weeks on the road felt bittersweet. The journey was long—crossing through Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Chicago, and Buffalo—but the lessons learned were worth every mile. Along the way, we encountered the stark beauty of Badlands National Park, the bustling energy of Chicago’s streets, and the warmth of familiar faces.
Back home, the ordinary feels extraordinary. Unloading bags, sharing stories, and savoring the comfort of home ground me as I look to the year ahead.
Closing Thoughts
Life is a journey of constant movement and growth, and this season was a testament to that. From the introspection of journaling to the physical act of traveling, every step is a reminder to cherish the present while embracing the future. As the days grow colder and a new year approaches, I hold onto the gratitude that has carried me through this journey.
Here’s to more adventures, more lessons, and more moments to savor.
