Gratefulness and Sunrise: A Reflection

Sunrises have become a special part of my life in recent times. There’s something about witnessing the break of dawn that fills me with gratitude—gratitude for life, for the beauty of the universe, and for the chance to witness such a magnificent event.

A little while before the sun rises, the entire horizon glows with a halo of light, a quiet proclamation of the sun’s greatness and grandeur. It’s like the sun is announcing its arrival, reminding us of its essential presence. Yet, when we see it fully risen in the sky, we often take it for granted, forgetting how special and vital it truly is.

Sunrises and sunsets have taken on an even greater meaning for me during my long road trips. I’ve been fortunate to witness countless sunrises—each one unique, each one humbling. Recently, during a beach vacation, my family started a tradition of greeting every new place we visit with a sunrise. It’s a simple ritual, but one that adds a profound layer of connection and gratefulness to our travels.

Last night, I arrived in Savannah around 4 o’clock. The city welcomed me with its charm—the moss-draped trees, the beautifully preserved brick homes, and the timeless architecture. Walking through its squares and along River Street, I felt the unique blend of history and serenity that Savannah offers.

But as much as I admired the city, my heart was set on the morning. I promised myself I would rise early to see the sunrise over Savannah, and it did not disappoint. There’s something indescribable about a sunrise over the ocean—where the horizon seems to stretch endlessly, and the first light dances on the water.

As I stood there, watching the sun break through the horizon, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the beauty of this moment, for the universe that God, our Creator, has made for us.

It’s easy to overlook the simple gifts we’re given every day, but moments like these remind me to slow down, to be present, and to appreciate the wonders around me. Sunrises, after all, are not just the beginning of a new day—they are a reminder of the infinite beauty and grace that surrounds us, if only we choose to see it.

Here’s to more sunrises, more gratitude, and more moments that fill our hearts with wonder.
